The company itself was started by Melanio Oliva in 1886 in the Pinar Del Rio area of Cuba. Forced to suspend growing tobacco while he fought in Cuba's War of Independence, Melanio returned home after the war and start producing some of the best tobacco in the world. In the 1920's, he handed off the company to his son, Hipolito Oliva. When communists overran Cuba, Hipolito shifted from growing and farming tobacco and brokering tobacco. But, in the 1960's, the pressure of the communists grew to be too much and Hipolito left Cuba for Nicaragua. These days, the Oliva family is the second largest grower of Cuban-seed tobacco in the country.
