Fernandez would bring out for guests toward the end of an evening at his home in Nicaragua. The Maduro replaces the Habano's Ecuadorian wrapper with aPennsylvania Broadleaf, surrounding an all-Nicaraguan binder and filler blend and giving Last Call a richer, more assertive personality.
At6" x 46, the Flaquitas is particularly well suited to Broadleaf. The relatively narrow ring gauge gives the dark, substantial wrapper a meaningful role throughout the smoke rather than allowing it to disappear behind a large filler core. The profile centers onearth, dark cocoa and pepper, with a restrained underlying sweetness rounding out the tobacco. It's medium-to-full in character, but the attraction is less about raw strength than the combination of Broadleaf richness and the more focused proportions of the Flaquitas.
