The Caldwell The King Is Dead Escape Plan Autopilot is perhaps the most connoisseur-minded expression of Escape Plan. The original King Is Dead was already an unconventional cigar, built around Dominican Negrito, a tobacco rarely given a starring role in modern premium blends. With Escape Plan, Robert Caldwell revisited that Dominican foundation rather than replacing it—working with different primings and filler proportions while changing the fermentation of the wrapper and binder. It's the sort of blending exercise that becomes particularly interesting once you've smoked the original and understand just how much leaf selection and fermentation can alter familiar tobacco.

The box-pressed 7" x 48 Autopilot is especially well chosen for that experiment. Its relatively restrained ring gauge gives the Negrito wrapper a meaningful voice, while seven inches provides enough tobacco—and enough time—for the blend to evolve. Expect an earthy, slightly rustic opening that gradually develops notes of cedar, espresso, cocoa and seasoned wood, with warm spice and a restrained natural sweetness underneath. More importantly, Autopilot isn't about overwhelming the palate. Its appeal is in the transitions, the texture of the smoke and the interplay between wrapper and Dominican core as the cigar progresses.

This is the Escape Plan I'd steer toward the smoker who has moved beyond chasing strength and oversized ring gauges and instead enjoys studying a well-made blend.
