Foundation Charter Oak Connecticut Shade Rothschild (4.5" x 50)

Foundation Charter Oak Connecticut Shade Rothschild is rooted in both Connecticut history and Nick Melillo’s own upbringing in the state’s tobacco country. The name recalls Hartford’s legendary Charter Oak, where Connecticut’s Royal Charter was said to have been hidden in 1687 rather than surrendered to representatives of the Crown. The tree became an enduring symbol of independence and resilience. Centuries later, Melillo borrowed that name for a cigar conceived around a similarly old-fashioned idea: an honest, well-made everyday smoke built with legitimate tobacco and priced to be enjoyed regularly.

The 4½" x 50 Rothschild dresses a Nicaraguan core in a silky Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper, creating the most approachable expression of Charter Oak. The compact proportions bring the blend together quickly, with cream, cedar and toasted bread joined by roasted nuts and a measured touch of pepper from the Nicaraguan tobacco underneath. The Shade wrapper keeps the profile smooth and aromatic without stripping away the earthy backbone that gives Charter Oak more character than the typical mild Connecticut cigar.

There is something particularly appropriate about Charter Oak in a Rothschild. It is a traditional, practical format—substantial enough to deliver real tobacco flavor but short enough for an everyday smoke. The Connecticut Shade version captures Melillo’s original philosophy especially well: good tobacco doesn’t need to be expensive, oversized or saved for an occasion to be worth paying attention to.
