Foundation Charter Oak Habano Rothschild takes the straightforward philosophy behind Nick Melillo’s Charter Oak and gives it a livelier, more tobacco-forward personality. Charter Oak takes its name from the great Hartford tree associated with the hiding of Connecticut’s Royal Charter in 1687, but the series is equally connected to Melillo’s own Connecticut roots. He grew up surrounded by the state’s tobacco culture and created Charter Oak as a tribute to the kind of flavorful, affordable cigars earlier generations smoked as part of everyday life rather than as luxury objects.
At 4½" x 50, the Rothschild is an excellent vehicle for the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, which surrounds Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos. Habano brings more aromatic spice and intensity than the Connecticut Shade version, with cedar, pepper and toasted tobacco arriving early against a foundation of earth and roasted nuts. Cocoa and natural sweetness round the profile as it develops. The short format concentrates the experience, while the 50 ring gauge provides enough Nicaraguan tobacco to keep the wrapper’s spice from dominating.
The Habano occupies an appealing middle ground within Charter Oak. It has more edge and tobacco intensity than the Shade without moving into the darker, sweeter territory of Broadleaf. In the Rothschild, that distinction becomes particularly clear.
