The Espinosa Knuckle Sandwich Habano Robusto J may have Guy Fieri’s name attached to it, but this is very much a cigar smoker’s cigar. Fieri worked with Erik Espinosa and his team for roughly 18 months before Knuckle Sandwich debuted in 2022, with the cigars ultimately entrusted to A.J. Fernandez’s San Lotano factory in Nicaragua. The Habano is the more classically styled of the original Knuckle Sandwich blends, built around an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler.
The 5" x 52 Robusto J is a particularly sensible size for the blend. There’s enough Nicaraguan tobacco to give the cigar some backbone, but not so much that the Habano wrapper gets buried. The profile stays firmly tobacco-driven, with cedar, toasted nuts and restrained pepper, along with just enough natural sweetness to round things out. Medium-bodied with some strength underneath, it’s balanced rather than showy—the kind of cigar that becomes more interesting when smoked slowly.
This is the Knuckle Sandwich to hand to the smoker who likes a good Nicaraguan cigar but doesn’t need everything turned up to eleven. The Robusto keeps the blend focused, the Habano wrapper remains present from start to finish, and the size makes it an easy cigar to return to regularly. Put a few in the humidor rather than judging this one by the celebrity name on the band. The tobacco deserves the attention.
