TheMy Father La Gran Oferta Robusto is a particularly pure expression of the García family's modern cigar-making style: Cuban tradition, Nicaraguan tobacco and an Ecuadorian wrapper chosen as much for character as appearance.La Gran Oferta—“The Great Offering”—revives the name and elaborate imagery of an obscure cigar brand dating to around 1913, but what's beneath the band is unmistakably contemporary My Father. Handcrafted at the family's celebrated factory inEstelí, Nicaragua, the blend combines Cuban-seed Nicaraguan tobaccos grown on García family farms with a beautifully oilyEcuadorian Habano Rosado wrapper.
At5" x 50, the Robusto wastes little time introducing itself. The Rosado wrapper brings aromatic spice and a subtle underlying sweetness to the deeper character of the Nicaraguan core, withblack pepper, cedar and earth establishing the foundation before roasted almond, dark chocolate and caramel-like sweetness begin to emerge. There is plenty of the peppery authority associated with José “Pepín” García, but La Gran Oferta was deliberately blended with greater restraint than some of My Father's more forceful cigars. The result is richness without unnecessary weight.
The Robusto is arguably where La Gran Oferta's balance is easiest to appreciate. There's enough Nicaraguan tobacco to give the cigar backbone, yet the classic 50-ring format keeps the Rosado wrapper firmly in the conversation. For an experienced My Father smoker, it's less about discovering another powerful Nicaraguan cigar and more about appreciating how well the Garcías can make strength, sweetness and spice work together.
